The Black Duck is a quality, beer-centric bar unlike any you’ve ever seen in Issaquah, Washington. A dedicated space for the discerning beer fan, founder Sean Quinn and Kyle Smith created the neighborhood pub to bring great beer to Gilman Village, most of which are curated from around the Pacific Northwest.

The Problem

While The Black Duck had plenty of word of mouth to stay busy, Sean wanted to create a brand and online presence that differentiated the neighborhood pub from its big brother restaurant, The Flat Iron Grill, located right next door. He needed a sophisticated experience that instantly let visitors know The Black Duck is anything but a run-of-the-mill dive bar.

The Solution

Fingerprint Marketing designed a brand identity and website that complemented the pub’s rustic industrial farmhouse vibe.

The pub features handmade reclaimed wood bar top and table tops, and we wanted to capture this feel in The Black Duck’s design elements. An illustrated logo and website creatively ties together key elements of the pub’s brand: reclaimed wood and a beer bottle opener that gives the illusion of both a bottle and black duck head at once.

We designed a set of navigation and social media icons to match the logo and brand. Plus, the sliding navigation adds a touch of sophistication that appeals to the 21 and over crowd.

Throughout the website, content is displayed using a text overlay on a changing background, which showcases images from inside the pub. For this project, we wrote copy for the home and our story pages from scratch, and we helped kick off the blog with posts that connect with true beer fans. From any page, visitors can click to learn about the great beer, great food and great vendors that make up The Black Duck.

The Result

The Black Duck’s brand and website feel as cozy and classy as the pub itself. We emphasized a clean design that allows Sean and Kyle to highlight what’s on the menu and easily update the ever-changing tap list.

And what’s more, we’re thrilled to announce that Fingerprint Marketing won the 2015 Graphic Design USA Award for our work on The Black Duck’s design elements!
