Responsive Web Design
We design websites that function perfectly on any device.
Since people are spending more and more time accessing the internet from smartphones and tablets, it is paramount that a website be responsive in design. A responsive design allows content, images and text, to adjust to the width and orientation of tablets and mobile phones. Your website should automatically and directly respond to a user’s device and change its design elements to adjust to the screen size of their device.
For example: A visitor viewing your website from a desktop computer will see a horizontally aligned navigation menu, but since we are used to scrolling down to see content on a phone, a visitor navigating your site from a mobile device will get a vertically aligned navigation menu and be able to scroll through content. We want your visitors to have a good experience when navigating your website and we want your brand to have a consistent look and feel across all devices. Our responsive website design allows this to happen.
How this is possible: The Basics of Understanding Responsive Design
1. Media queries: This is a CSS3 module, media queries allow developers to manipulate content across different devices without changing the content. Media queries allow for multiple design layouts to fit onto any screen size for a consistent look across devices. This is the technology that is the cornerstone of all responsive web designs.
2. Fluid Grids: Created using CSS, fluid grids make the design elements of your website flexible; spacing is consistent and columns automatically rearrange themselves and adjust to specific screen widths, thereby matching whatever mobile devices are being used by your visitors.
3. flexible images: This bit of code prevents media files from going past the dimensions of their containers. As the size of the screen changes, so does the image it contains, the image remain sharp, not pixelated or stretched out.
Why is Responsive Design important?
Today more than half of all U.S. online traffic comes from smartphones and tablets. People want to be able to access information on the go. Additionally, people visiting a website from a mobile device will expect to be able to use all the functionality of their device while on the website. This might include; one click to call a number displayed on a website or one click on an address to have the directions go to “maps”, or scrolling down on a smartphone to view content. If your website is not responsive, it will not adapt to the functionality of these devices and the user experience will be frustrating enough that they will not return to your site and they will not recommend your site to others.
As mentioned in our information on Website Design, Google is indexing your web page based on how it renders on a mobile phone versus a desktop computer. Only website designs that are responsive and adapt to any size device will be deemed mobile-friendly and moved up in search rankings by Google, while non-mobile optimized websites will start to
see a ranking decline in the Google search results. Better search rankings translate to more visitors and more business means more sales!
